The Arizona Diamondbacks plan to use Yasmany Tomas, who they promoted on Wednesday, as an offensive punch off the bench.

"He'll play off the bench for us," Chip Hale said. "If there's a start, we'll see. I'm not sure."

The Diamondbacks signed Tomas to a six-year, $68.5 million deal in the offseason.

"I think we're just going to have to play it by ear and see what happens," Dave Stewart said of the long-term plan for Tomas. "We're still trying to develop Yasmany and make sure he gets playing time.

"If he's just here to hit and doesn't get much time in the field, then that's not beneficial to him and we'll have to explore what our other options are at that time."

Tomas hit a ground ball to second base in his first Major League at-bat on Wednesday night.
