The San Diego Padres hope to sign Justin Upton, who they acquired in a trade this offseason, to a long-term deal.

Upton is entering the final season of the six-year, $61.25 million deal he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010.

"We made a big trade for him, and when you do something like that, you always hope you can work something out long term and do something together," A.J. Preller said. "Yeah, I mean, Justin Upton, that's why we acquired him. You always want guys like that on your team."
