The Yankees announced Carl Pavano won't make Sunday's start at Comerica Park due to a sore right shoulder. "It's a major concern because you don't know the extent of it," Torre said of Pavano's problem. The shoulder pain has come and gone throughout the season, robbing him of arm strength, but became more serious after his start Monday in Baltimore. Chien-Ming Wang, will start today against the Tigers and Tanyon Sturtze will come out of the bullpen for his initial start of the season tomorrow night against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium. Wang was supposed to pitch Monday and Sturtze was slotted for Tuesday. Pavano, who informed the Yankees on Friday about the discomfort, will have tests on the shoulder after the club returns home for the six-game homestand that begins tomorrow. While Pavano believes he will be able to start Friday or Saturday, the Yankees are likely to shut him down until after the All-Star break. The disabled list is always an option, but one Torre doesn't want to consider. "Let's see how serious it is before we talk in terms of two weeks," Torre said. If Pavano's problem is serious, the Yankees may have to change their approach to acquiring a pitcher, such as the Giants' Jason Schmidt or the Marlins' A.J. Burnett. The Yankees haven't talked to the Giants in 10 days about Schmidt and haven't held formal discussions with the Marlins concerning Burnett. In both cases, the Yankees believe the cost in talent is excessive and there are questions about each pitcher's arms.
