The Padres made a "very competitive offer" to free-agent Pablo Sandoval, a baseball source told MLB.com late Saturday.

It's not known if that offer, believed to be five years, surpassed the rumored $95M mark that the Boston Globe reported that the Red Sox offered Sandoval.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Padres had actually presented the highest offer for Sandoval but that he might be favoring the Red Sox.
