The Chicago Cubs have been granted a waiver claim on Cole Hamels, but a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies is unlikely, according to sources.

Chicago claiming the left-hander makes it nearly impossible for Philadelphia to trade Hamels, who has more than $100 million left on the four-plus years remaining on his contract.

The Phillies sought one of Chicago's young shortstops in a trade for Hamels, which almost certainly means Addison Russell. Starlin Castro and Javier Baez are subject to waivers and nearly impossible to deal in that fashion.

The Cubs have payroll flexibility, but no desire to spend that much on one player right now.
