Alex Rodriguez was found to have relatively minimal cartilage damage in his left hip during surgery this week, according to a person familiar with the diagnosis.

The Yankees have not made details of the surgery public, other than to say that it went well.

Dr. Bryan Kelly, who operated on Rodriguez on Wednesday, said last week the extent of cartilage damage was a concern.

New York said recovery time is six months, a timetable that projects Rodriguez to return after the All-Star break.
