Kaz Matsui indicated in a published report that he would waive his no-trade clause if the organization had lost faith in him and a move was mutually beneficial, perhaps allowing him to return to shortstop. Matsui would not reiterate that statement yesterday, and a Mets insider said that sentiment has not been communicated to team brass. Regardless, it's unlikely Matsui would get traded because the Mets couldn't get back a comparable player and because his contract - a three-year, $20.1 million deal signed before the 2004 season - is too cumbersome. Matsui has no-trade protection to every team but the Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. "I'd like to stay in New York because the Mets gave me this opportunity," Matsui said yesterday through interpreter Nozomu Matsumoto.
