Kerry Wood is deciding to opt for rehab instead of surgery and he hopes to be with the Cubs next year and reiterated he would "love to stay here." The Cubs are not going to pick up his $13 million option, but still can negotiate a low-based contract with incentives. "I don't know if 'owes' is the word, necessarily," manager Dusty Baker said. "I think that's up to both sides to talk about. Certainly if he can come back and perform up to speed, that's something definitely everybody has to consider." But the Cubs won't know if Wood will rebound until next spring, even though they will have to make a decision this winter. "You will get an idea of how he's rehabbing and how things are," Baker said. "It's all a risk in the first place. Just depends on how much risk everyone's willing to take." Though Wood reiterated he will return as a reliever, he hopes eventually to go back to a starting role if his arm feels stronger a year or two down the line. "It's pretty simple," Wood said. "If I want to pitch in the big leagues and stay healthy, for me, that's the best decision."
