The Red Sox had several lineup decisions to make after activating Kevin Youkilis from the disabled list on Tuesday. Adrian Gonzalez played right field, while Youkilis manned first base. That allowed hot rookie Will Middlebrooks to remain in the lineup at third. David Ortiz maintained his customary designated hitter role. Under ordinary circumstances, Middlebrooks might have been sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket, despite how well he performed while Youkilis was absent. "It's a compounded situation," Bobby Valentine said. "It's just not that Will's hitting well; there's this void in the outfield. And it seems like the situation presented what at least today's solution is about."
