Vernon Wells has this season plus one more on the original five-year contract he signed on the same day as Eric Hinske and for basically the same money, at spring training of 2003. Ricciardi has tied up Roy Halladay, A.J. Burnett and B.J. Ryan through 2010 for a combined $135.8 million (all figures U.S.). "We went (to Wells) at spring training and said we think it would be best if we both wait until after the year," Ricciardi said. "If Vernon stays here or doesn't stay here it's not going to be because we don't want him. It's going to be because we want him, but if he becomes a free agent he may decide to test the market. We'd love to have Vernon stay here. It's just a matter if he wants to stay here."
