The Nationals have sent Bryce Harper to the Minor Leagues and keeping the outfielder at the Triple-A level through July might be a smart financial decision. Having Harper begin the 2012 season in the minors will allow Washington to retain his rights for the 2018 season. If Harper is called up before July 1, he may be classified as a "Super Two" at the conclusion of 2014 -- the top 22 percent of players with two-plus years of service. Instead of going through the process three times, they are granted four arbitration hearings, and can begin to escalate their salaries a year earlier than players with two years of service time who do not qualify as Super Twos. Based on previous cases, keeping Harper in the minor leagues through July 1 could save the Nationals about $14 million over the next seven years.
