Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has explained why the team isn't ready to recall catching prospect Jesus Montero and why they didn't do so when starter Russell Martin was nursing a sore back. Cashman said he would not bring Montero up unless Martin had to go the disabled list because he needs flexibility with his 40-man roster to make pitching moves. "Is Montero better than Cervelli? Yeah, he is," Cashman said. "But Montero is not on the roster right now. If Russell Martin is not going to be a DL [situation] and it's going to be a day-to-day thing I'm not going to bring a guy for a day or two." Cashman added that he won't promote Montero just to sit on the bench. "If Montero comes, I want him to come to play," he said. "I don't want him to come to sit and play once every five days. I don't think that's in his best interests."
