The Padres will honor former closer Trevor Hoffman by retiring his No. 51 in a ceremony on Aug. 21. Hoffman is baseball's all-time leader in saves with 601. He retired in January after playing 18 big league seasons. He's a special assistant to Padres president Tom Garfinkel. "I wasn't prepared for that," Hoffman said after hearing of the plans for a ceremony. "It's a team game and to have an individual celebration is not something I'm comfortable with. You never really like all the light on you. I'm just looking forward to celebrating with everybody."
