Major League Baseball has issued a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine to infielder Jerry Hairston of the Washington Nationals for his aggressive actions, which included making contact with Umpire Ed Hickox, during the bottom of the seventh inning of the club's Friday, May 27th game against the San Diego Padres as Nationals Park in Washington, DC. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards and On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement. Hairston had been scheduled to begin to serve his suspension this afternoon, when the Nationals are to conclude their series with the Padres. However, Hairston has elected to appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.
