Toronto Blue Jays general Alex Anthopoulos all but confirmed a multi-year deal with slugger Jose Bautista has been worked out. Bautista's arbitration hearing to determine his 2011 salary was supposed to happen on Friday in Phoenix. Anthopoulos said he'd be surprised if Bautista remained in Phoenix much longer. "I'd expect him here by tomorrow," Anthopoulos said, a strong inference that Friday's arbitration hearing was no longer necessary. Bautista was seeking a raise on a one-year deal that would see his salary increase to $10.5-million from $2.4. The Blue Jays had countered with an offer of $7.6-million. Late Wednesday night, ESPN Deportes was reporting that the Blue Jays and Bautista were close to agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth approximately $65-million. A club option could bring the deal's total value to $78-million over six years.
