The Padres are close to signing corner infielder Jorge Cantu to a one-year contract, according to a source. The agreement is pending a physical. Cantu set a Major League record by starting the season with 10 consecutive games with at least one hit and one RBI with the Marlins in 2010. His best season came in 2005, when he batted .286 and hit 28 homers while driving in 117 runs for Tampa Bay.
