Mariners closer David Aardsma, the subject of considerable trade speculation over the offseason, will undergo surgery to repair a tear in the labrum in his left hip on Monday, general manager Jack Zduriencik announced on Thursday. Aardsma, 29, had been bothered by the hip since the end of last season but thought it was an oblique muscle strain that would heal with rest. Instead the issue flared up again when he began throwing a few weeks ago, and tests on Tuesday revealed the labrum tear. Aardsma's surgery will be performed in Vail, Colo., by Dr. Marc Phillipon, a specialist whose previous clients include Alex Rodriguez and former Mariners catcher Rob Johnson.
