The first offer the Yankees made to free-agent shortstop Derek Jeter was for three years and less than $45 million, according to a report by Ian O'Connor of ESPN.com. New York increased their offer to $45 million over three years when the initial offer was rebuffed. Coming off a $189 million contract, Jeter is believed to desire another $100-plus deal. O'Connor writes that the two sides might eventually meet somewhere in the middle and agree on a four-year, $70 million pact.
