One day after shaving his head as part of the Cubs' "Bald is Beautiful" campaign, Carlos Zambrano pumped out 22 straight fastballs in the final inning, blowing away Jose Offerman on a 98-m.p.h. heater with the tying run on third to end the game with a flourish. Just like that, the Cubs' seven-game losing streak was over, and the Mother's Day crowd of 38,656 celebrated wildly. With newly anointed closer Ryan Dempster warming up in the bullpen, manager Dusty Baker let Zambrano throw a season-high 136 pitches in a five-hit gem against the Phillies. There was no chance Baker would remove Zambrano. He said afterward it was his starter's game to win or lose. "This season my pitch count has been lower, 105-110 pitches," Zambrano said. "This is the time when I start getting some innings and [more] pitches. Like I said last year, 130 pitches, or 140 pitches ? that's nothing. I work hard in the off-season, and that's why I'm here?to pitch my game."
