The only mystery surrounding Roger Clemens' return now seems to be which team he'll return to. The Yankees are - no surprise - very interested. Yankees people think it will be a two-team derby between them and the Astros for Clemens. The Yankees actually view Houston as a slight favorite for Clemens, even though he'd have to sit out until May 1 to re-sign with the Astros. So the Yankees have their eye on Clemens' little buddy Andy Pettitte as a backup plan. They see Pettitte's ridiculously backloaded contract ($17.5 million in '06) as a potential impetus for a midseason trade should Houston fall out of the race. Rangers owner Tom Hicks, a Longhorn like Clemens, is looking desperate trying to get Clemens' attention. But the Rangers probably are running no better than third right now. Boston's best hope is that he stays somewhere in Texas (and doesn't come back to the Bronx) because there's no chance he's going back to the Red Sox. But don't be surprised to see Boston target Pettitte, too, considering its bid of $54 million for four years was more money and years than anyone else offered two winters ago. But just like with Clemens, it's up to Pettitte; he has a no-trade provision.
