The Cleveland Indians avoided arbitration with first baseman Ben Broussard on Wednesday, signing the first baseman to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. Broussard asked for $2.6 million in arbitration while the Indians countered with $2.25 million. Broussard, who made $365,000 in 2005, hit .255 with 19 homers and 68 RBI in 142 games last season. The 29-year-old is expected to platoon at first base next season with righthander Eduardo Perez, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason.
