Michael Bourn has altered his mental approach this year, preparing for each at-bat while refusing to let one day?s results or one poor plate appearance drag into the next. He also has been paying closer attention to the entire game while peppering Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence and others about their individual approaches at the plate. ?Last year I would be focused,? Bourn said. ?But I would be like, ?I need to get this much today. I need to do this today,? instead of trying to get what you can out of the day and move on to the next day. ?I can?t really explain it to you, but it was in my mind. Now I try to focus on one day at a time and just take the day and put all I?ve got into today both defensively and offensively and move on to the next day.? Bourn made dramatic strides while playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic. Bourn, who hit .229 with a .288 on-base percentage and 111 strikeouts last year, is hitting .298 this season with one home run, 10 RBIs, a National League-high 13 stolen bases and a .370 on-base percentage. ?I think I just approach each game as one game,? Bourn said. ?I don?t really try to look past this game; I don?t dwell on the game before. I had a great game (Thursday, going 4-for-5 against Colorado), but it?s over with. I have to move on to the next game.?
