David Ortiz will not play again until Tuesday, as the Red Sox try to help him escape his current slump. He went 0-for-7 for the first time in his career on Thursday, and has yet to hit a home run yet this season. "Sometimes stepping back can help," manager Terry Francona said. "Maybe I'm too late in doing this. I hope not. I just think he needs to take a deep breath. Even when he's struggling, we love his presence. This is the time to take a step back, take a deep breath, and help us in the long run." Ortiz is hitting .208 with 15 RBI, and his struggles have started to affect the normally happy-go-lucky designated hitter. "People that support this team need to take a step back and allow him to become himself again," teammate Jason Varitek said. "He hasn't gotten it yet, but once he gets it, he's going to even out into who he is. He's in a different place right now. He needs to continue to understand that we're behind him, and hopefully a nation stays behind him."
