Nomar Garciaparra once formed the great triumvirate of shortstops along with Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, but the ex-Boston star may be joining A-Rod at a new position after this winter. Garciaparra, a free agent, won't be back with the Cubs, who are pursuing Rafael Furcal, unless it's as an outfielder. Other teams are considering Garciaparra for every stop in the infield, as well as the outfield. "We've been approached by a number of teams discussing a variety of positions," said Arn Tellem, Garciaparra's agent. "At this point, Nomar is open to whatever is the best baseball situation." Tellem refused to discuss what teams are interested, though he numbered them at "five or six. I don't feel comfortable commenting further until things start to move." According to various media reports, the Twins, Angels, Pirates, Tigers, Orioles, Padres and Dodgers have expressed interest in Garciaparra. Last winter, a friend of Garciaparra's told the Daily News he would move to second to accommodate a contender. Last season, Garciaparra actually played more games at third (34) than he did at short (26) for the Cubs, when he made $8.25 million on a one-year deal and hit .283 with nine homers and 30 RBI. He has played only 143 games over the last two seasons after turning down a four-year, $60-million deal with the Red Sox. "Is he an everyday player anymore?" wondered one baseball official. "He'll have to re-establish himself. I don't think anyone is going to pay him like he was what he was. Maybe he'll get a one-year deal with a low base and incentives. You can't lock in that much money, because he could be a disaster. But he could be back to his old self, too." Two intriguing, though perhaps far-fetched, scenarios: Garciaparra returns to Boston, where he could play third or first. Or he roams left at the Stadium and the Yanks move Hideki Matsui to center.
