When manager Joe Maddon arrived in Tampa Bay three years ago he saw a lot of the legendary Bob Gibson in young starting pitcher Edwin Jackson. Maddon saw the raw strength, athleticism, and all-around baseball ability. He also saw the combination of a powerful fastball and slider. The manager brought Jackson, now with the Tigers, a DVD of Gibson in action in the 1960s. "He was electrifying," Jackson said of Gibson. "He was pretty tough on the mound." "You have to be a beast," he said. "You have to come at people and leave it all out there. Of course, I wouldn't compare myself to Gibson. But he showed how to challenge hitters and how to come at people."
