The Kansas City Royals today have signed right-handed pitcher Jamey Wright to a minor league contract for the 2009 season. Wright has been invited to Major League Spring Training, which opens this Friday in Surprise, Ariz. The 34-year old Wright is a 13-year Major League veteran who pitched in 2008 for the Texas Rangers, going 8-7 with a 5.12 ERA in 75 relief appearances. A starter his entire career, Wright pitched exclusively in the bullpen for Texas last season. The 6-foot-5, 230-pounder from Oklahoma City is 79-110 in his career for Colorado, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Kansas City, San Francisco and Texas. He was 1-2 with a 4.26 ERA in four starts, including two complete games, for the Royals in 2003. Wright and his wife, Marnie, have one daughter, Presley, and one son, Jett. The Royals also announced that right-handed pitcher Luke Hudson will not be in Major League camp as he continues to rehab his right shoulder.
