General manager Doug Melvin received a three-year contract extension Saturday after a .500 season -- the team's first non-losing record since 1992. "I'm delighted Doug's going to be with us through 2009," owner Mark Attanasio said. "I think we can do a lot of great things for the organization and the community." Attanasio declined to reveal financial terms of the deal but said he collected data on GM salaries and Melvin is at "the upper end of the range." One of Melvin's first orders of business most likely will be to extend the contract of manager Ned Yost, who guided the team to an 81-81 record last season thanks to the emergence of such prospects as J.J. Hardy and Rickie Weeks. Yost has a year left on his contract.
