As expected, the Angels have contacted slugger Paul Konerko's agent as the first baseman heads toward free agency. Konerko, who helped the Chicago White Sox win the World Series for the first time in 88 years, filed for free agency last Thursday and is the top power hitter on the market. Konerko hit .283 with 40 home runs and 100 RBI. He hit 41 homers and drove in 117 runs the previous season. The Angels, who are looking for a power hitter to join Vladimir Guerrero and Garret Anderson in the middle of the lineup, are one of several teams that covet Konerko, according to his agent, Craig Landis. Teams cannot negotiate with other teams' free agents until Nov. 11. "They contacted me a couple of days ago to say they are interested," Landis said. "That's all they said, to officially let us know. They are interested and will be talking to us at a more appropriate time." Landis said Konerko, 29, is seeking a deal of six or seven years, possibly including a strict no-trade clause. "Paul wants a long deal. He wants to spend the second half of his career with a team for the entire time," Landis said. "He doesn't want to be moving around. He wants to settle into a community and buy a house."
