Mets' reliever Billy Wagner is nearing his return to the mound, but might not close for the team right away, according to New York Post. Manager Jerry Manuel said on Friday that how Wagner performs in a possible minor-league rehab assignment Sunday, or in his first few big-league appearances next week, will determine his role with the team. "Nobody is guaranteed nothing here," Manuel said. "If that [first] performance is what we hope it to be, sure, he'll come back and do what he's been doing. But if there are any signs of shakiness, then I'll have to make a decision. Whatever it takes to win the game, that's what we'll do." Wagner has been on the disabled list since Aug. 3 with a strained left forearm and swelling in his left elbow.
