Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has been named the June recipient of the American League Rookie of the Month Award presented by Gillette. In 26 games last month, Longoria hit .300 (30-100) with Major League rookie-highs of eight home runs and 19 RBI. Longoria, the third overall pick in the first round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft from Long Beach State University, scored 19 runs, stroked 11 doubles, drew 13 walks, posted a .650 slugging percentage and a .374 on-base percentage. Longoria?s month was highlighted by a June 9th game against the Angels in which he had the second multi-homer game of his career, along with a double and four runs scored, in Tampa Bay?s 13-4 win. The 22-year-old compiled four home runs and 12 RBI in a six-game stretch from June 22nd-28th. The Rays won six of their final seven games in June and closed the month with a 50-32 record (.610), the best mark in Major League Baseball. As of Tuesday night, Longoria held the lead among the five American League candidates for the Monster 2008 All-Star Game Final Vote on MLB.com.
