Giants Activate Benitez After Closer Misses 96 Games

San Francisco closer Armando Benitez was activated from the 15-day disabled list Monday after missing 96 games with a right hamstring injury.
Benitez was injured April 26 while covering first base on a routine play for the final out of a game against the San Diego Padres. The right-hander had surgery May 3 to reattach two tendons to his pelvis.
The Giants signed him to a three-year contract worth $21.5 million last winter to be the dominant closer they've lacked since Robb Nen's career-ending injury in 2002.
Right-handed Brian Cooper was outrighted to Triple-A Fresno to make room for Benitez. Cooper was 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA over 10 innings after his callup from Fresno on Aug. 7.
