Curt Schilling continues to emphasize that he will fill whatever role the Red Sox ask, but he would prefer to return to the starting rotation. In the interim, he continues to show remarkable resiliency pitching from the bullpen. Pitching for the eighth time in the last nine games, Schilling allowed Mike Sweeney's 17th homer leading off the ninth inning but earned his eighth save in the Sox' 11-9 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park yesterday. Schilling and the Sox also have benefited from two open dates on the schedule during that span, but eight appearances in 11 days is still a considerable amount of work for a longtime starter. ``I don't feel as fresh as I would on the days I start,'' admitted Schilling, now 2-1 with eight saves and a 2.45 ERA in his last 13 appearances, a period that includes every relief appearance but his first. ``(Wednesday), I threw the ball as poorly as I have since I've been (in Boston) and (yesterday) I threw probably as well as I have since I've been (in the bullpen).'' While the Sox currently have no plans to move Schilling out of the bullpen, that decision may depend largely on the progress of Keith Foulke, who is scheduled to throw off a mound on Monday. ``We've used (Schilling) and (Mike) Timlin a lot and I think we've been very careful so we can use them a lot,'' manager Terry Francona said.
