The New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees at Shea Stadium to take game one of Subway Series 2007. The loss drops the Yankees 10 games back of the first-place Red Sox in the American League East, for the first time in the managerial tenure of Joe Torre and the biggest deficit the team has faced in 12 years. The entirety of the Yankee run production consisted of Hideki Matsui's two-run homerun off starter Oliver Perez (5-3) which gave the Bombers a brief 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. The Mets took back the lead in the fifth on Endy Chavez' two-run homer off starter Andy Pettitte (2-3), putting the Mets up 3-2 for good. Billy Wagner struck out pinch-hitter Jason Giambi to end the game and pick up his 10th save in 10 chances. Alex Rodriguez was 0-4 and has only four hits in his last 27 at-bats.
