Jed Lowrie will have surgery Friday for a torn ligament in his right thumb and the Houston Astros will be without him until after the All-Star break.

The infielder was injured Monday night while sliding into home plate.

"Obviously Jed is a big part of our team this year so far," Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow told the Houston Chronicle. "And we expect him to be part of this team in the second half, but he's going to miss the next couple of months."

Lowrie, who was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday, is hitting .300 with four home runs and 10 RBIs.
