Ruben Amaro, Jr. fought back tears as the Philadelphia Phillies announced that Charlie Manuel had been dismissed on Friday.

The Phillies were careful not to use the word "fired" to describe the move from Manuel to interim manager Ryne Sandberg. Their press release was titled: "Phillies Announce Managerial Change."

However, Manuel announced during the press conference that: "I never quit nothin'. And I didn't resign."

The Phillies have struggled mightily as of late and Manuel wasn't going to return for the 2014 season. Manuel agreed to participate in the press conference announcing the move.

Manuel has been considered a hero in Philadelphia since leading the team to a World Series title in 2008.
