Joe Torre knows Gary Sheffield's best opportunity to stay with the club next season probably lies at first base. "When you consider the outfield,'' Torre said, "you've got [Bobby] Abreu, [Johnny] Damon, [Hideki] Matsui and [Melky] Cabrera, so first base looks like a spot that could be intriguing." Torre said he was set to talk to Sheffield about working at first base when the veteran was forced to the disabled list by wrist surgery. "When I did present it to him, he said, 'You know me, Skip, I'm here to win a ring,'" Torre said.
