Randy Johnson opened the game by striking out Freddy Sanchez on three pitches. Then he struck out Matt Lawton on three pitches.
"Every time he goes out there and shows that kind of stuff he showed early on, everybody thinks a no-hitter," Yankees manager Joe Torre.
While he didn't throw a no-hitter, Johnson pitched his finest game with the Yankees. He reached double digits in strikeouts for the first time this year and threw a five-hitter Thursday night, leading New York to a 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates that completed a three-game sweep.
"He was great!" Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said.
