The Rockies drafted Justin Solomon in the 35th round of the First-Year Player Draft this week. Solomon spent the past year of his life in a grueling battle with cancer. "This is probably the biggest thing that has ever happened to me," said Solomon, who recently graduated from Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, New Mexico. "When I got cancer, I thought baseball was done for me. It is amazing how much it has still been a part of my life." He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia last July. Rockies regional scout Chris Forbes has also fought leukemia. Forbes took it upon himself to make sure Solomon became one of 1,238 players drafted this week. "I was bugging the guys to death about it in the Draft room," Forbes said. "I was dead-set on doing my best to draft him. "I gravitate towards people like Justin. Drafting him was a no-brainer. This is something he can hold onto forever. He can always say, 'I was a 35th rounder with the Rockies in 2012."
