Vernon Wells has a torn ligament in his right thumb.
The Angels outfielder will undergo surgery Tuesday, a procedure that is expected to sideline him for at least eight to 10 weeks.
Wells, who is batting .244 with six home runs and 12 RBI, was injured while sliding into second base on a stolen base on Sunday against the Padres.
