Doug Mientkiewicz has signed a minor league contract with the Marlins, the team confirmed on Wednesday. Known primarily for his defensive prowess, Mientkiewicz has played for the Twins, Red Sox, Mets, Royals, Yankees, Pirates and Dodgers during a 10-year major league career. He played in 20 games last season for Los Angeles, but spent much of the year on the disabled list because of a shoulder injury. Mientkiewicz spent spring training with the Dodgers and competed for a left-handed pinch-hitting role, but did not make the team. Los Angeles offered Mientkiewicz a coaching job in the organization, but he decided not to accept it in order to continue playing.
