The Red Sox haven?t completely abandoned the notion of trading Manny Ramirez, but there appears little substance to a report that they had serious talks with the Angels this week regarding the perpetually disgruntled slugger. The Los Angeles Times reported yesterday that the Sox offered Ramirez to the Angels in exchange for infielder-outfielder Chone Figgins, pitcher Ervin Santana and two of the Angels? top three minor league prospects - shortstop Brandon Wood and second baseman Howie Kendrick. The Times also reported that the Sox wanted the Angels to assume virtually all of the remaining $57 million due to Ramirez over the final three guaranteed years of his contract. Yesterday, both clubs indicated that nothing was brewing regarding that deal. Although the teams have remained in sporadic contact throughout the winter, a top Red Sox executive said that serious Ramirez talks weren?t taking place anymore. Angels general manager Bill Stoneman, meanwhile, said he has no intentions of trading his top prospects. ?I?ve stated pretty clearly that we?ve got real good young players coming up, (and) I?d like to be in a position to give each one of them an opportunity,? Stoneman told the Orange County Register. ?I?ll leave it at that.?
