Gary Sheffield still believes that he's an everyday player, but the Mets disagree. New York acquired Jeff Francoeur on Friday, and plans to use him to give Sheffield more rest. Sheffield has started 48 out of 86 games this season. "When you're 40 years old, it's tough to try and convince someone verbally of what you can still do," he said. "I just wanted that opportunity and I've shown I can still play." Mets manager Jerry Manuel said that he plans to play Sheffield three out of every five days after the All-Star break. "I know I can play every day," Sheffield contended. "It's just a matter of me committing mentally to it. I made the commitment to take whatever role was asked of me when I came here, and I got myself in outfield shape in the middle of the season."
