In an opinion piece in the New York Times, Doug Glanville suggests that perhaps Alex Rodriguez was not intentionally tipping opposing batters, but was rather signaling his own teammates and having these signals deciphered by the opposition. Glanville also urges the media and fans not to rush to judgment or to make Rodriguez the sole target of the public's frustration for all that is wrong with sports. "Although I have never heard such a rumor about Alex, this may be one of the most egregious charges one can make against a player, and a rare one at that," writes Glanville. "Should a player know that someone in his own dugout is helping the opposing team, I would venture to say that all-out Armageddon would ensue."
