Dodgers Secretly Bid On Fielder

The Dodgers pushed hard behind the scenes in recent weeks to sign Prince Fielder.

For a while, the bankrupt club believed that they might have a chance to sign the free agent secretly. Their initial offer was a seven-year deal that included a four-year opt-out.

The Dodgers even flew to meet with Fielder at an undisclosed location before he signed with the Tigers this week.

The Nationals were also believed to be in on Fielder up until he agreed to join Detroit.

Zimmerman May Structure Deal To Help Nationals Acquire Other Talent

Ryan Zimmerman is open to structuring a potential extension with the Nationals in such a way that it would free up money in the team's budget to build a competitive team around him.

"We've kind of talked the whole time and agreed both sides would be creative," Zimmerman said. "We want to do a deal so it helps me and the team at the same time, so they can go out and sign guys like Prince Fielder or other free agents.

"The reason I want to be here, I've been here for the bad times, and I hope to be here for the good times. If they're going to have a couple guys that are going to make a ton of money and make it so they can't sign other guys, that's not what I want.

"Both sides are willing to try and be creative and work some stuff out. I have two years left here for sure. I would like to make that however many years I have left playing. We'll see where it goes."

Extension Between Nationals, Zimmerman 'In Reach'

The Nationals would like to sign Ryan Zimmerman to a long-term contract.

Zimmerman "has informed the team of the exact terms he would accept long-term," according to a report.

An agreement between the two sides is within reach, according to two sources.

Zimmerman, 27, hit .289 with 12 homers last season in 101 games. The third baseman is scheduled to be paid $12 million next season and $14 million for the following year.

Nationals In Race For Fielder, But Nothing Imminent

The Nationals are still active in the Prince Fielder sweepstakes, but they are not close to finalizing a deal.

The stumbling block continues to be the length of the contract, according to a baseball source.

Fielder is looking for a contract similar to the 10-year deal first baseman Albert Pujols received from the Angels, but the Nationals don't want to go more than five or six years.
