Hanrahan Out As Nationals' Closer

The Nationals have decided that Joel Hanrahan will no longer be their closer.

Washington will go with the bullpen-by-committee approach, with pitchers Julian Tavarez and Kip Wells as late-inning options.

The team's bullpen blew a four-run lead against the Phillies on Monday night. Philadelphia prevailed 13-11.

"I hope I don't wear out this word, but, again, it was deflating," manager Manny Acta said. "Our offense just battled all day and scored enough runs. We played so hard for eight innings to score enough runs. You lose the game in one inning, it's just tough for the whole team."

Nationals Confirm Interest In Pedro

Nationals acting general manager Mike Rizzo confirmed on Friday that the team has interest in free agent pitcher Pedro Martinez.

Martinez is seeking $5 million annually.

"Early on we had mild interest," Rizzo said, "and I would say it's probably still at a mild interest. If the price were right we'd consider it, just to give us a little more depth.

"Now I feel good about our rotation; they're young, but I think the upside of the staff is really good. But Pedro would have a good stabilizing effect just because of his experience level and his willingness to be a teacher and a mentor to the young guys. This guy is a Hall of Fame pitcher who knows how to prepare himself and get ready for games, and that's how I would describe our interest level."
