Nationals Place Pena On Waivers; Keep Young

The Nationals have placed outfielder Wily Mo Pena on waivers, and decided to keep the contract of first baseman Dmitri Young.

Opposing teams have three days to claim Pena and pick up his $2 million salary. If not, Washington could outright him to Triple-A Syracuse or he could ask for his release.

"I think he needs to go down there to get his everyday at-bats and reps in the outfield," assistant general manager Mike Rizzo said. "He needs to prove, not only to the Nationals but 29 other clubs, that he is a viable Major League force."

Nationals Unsuccessfully Shopping Johnson

The Nationals have been shopping first baseman Nick Johnson this offseason, but haven't had any team express serious interest.

With no serious offers, Washington appears content to keep Johnson a part of their plans as the season begins.

Nationals Aren't Scared Of Strasburg's Price

Nationals president Stan Kasten is holding firm that the team will work hard to sign whoever they take with the first overall pick, but won't buck the system for any one player.

There have been reports that college pitcher Stephen Strasburg and agent Scott Boras might seek a six-year, $50 million contract.

"A hundred years of baseball and four decades of collective bargaining have shown how you develop players and how they proceed through the system," Kasten said. "There's a time for drafting, a time for development, a time for arbitration and a time for free agency. No one situation can change the whole sport, even less so these days, with where the economy is now."
