Nationals Manager Robinson Will Not Return

The Washington Nationals set up a news conference before Saturday's home game, and are expected to announce Frank Robinson will not return as manager in 2007.

Robinson has managed the Expos-Nationals franchise the past five seasons. The club entered Saturday's game against the New York Mets with a 71-89 record, assured of finishing last in the NL East for the third consecutive season. The regular season ends Sunday.

The 71-year-old Robinson is in his 16th season as a manager for four clubs. He was the first black manager in the major leagues. He is a Hall of Famer who ranks sixth in baseball history with 586 homers.

Tearful Frank Robinson May Be Done As Nats' Manager

If Frank Robinson's words didn't explicitly reveal that he'll be done as the Nationals' manager at the end of this season, the tears filling his eyes Thursday sure seemed to get the message across.

Robinson, working under a one-year contract, finally got a chance to discuss his future with Nationals president Stan Kasten and general manager Jim Bowden in separate meetings Thursday, something the Hall of Famer has wanted for some time.

"I'm at ease," said the 71-year-old Robinson, in his fifth season with the Expos-Nationals franchise.

Will Robinson Return As Nationals Manager?

Frank Robinson just wants to hear something. One way or another.

For his sake. And, he insists, for his coaches' sake. Will he be asked to return as the manager of the Nationals next season? If not, will he know before this season ends, so he can have a sense of closure?

With only a few days remaining in Washington's season, Robinson says he hasn't been approached by the front office about his status. He has a one-year contract.
