Soriano Fastest Ever To Achieve 200 Home Runs And 200 Steals

Washington Nationals outfielder Alfonso Soriano became the 40th player in major-league history and the fastest ever to reach 200 homers and 200 steals for his career.

Soriano reached the milestone in his 929th career game, eclipsing Eric Davis as the quickest member of the 200-200 club. Davis accomplished the feat with homer No. 200 in his 1,053rd game on Sept. 18, 1993.

Soriano In Elite Company

Alfonso Soriano's combination of power and speed has put him in elite company.

Soriano hit a leadoff homer, Ryan Zimmerman went deep and drove in a career-best five runs, and the Nationals beat the Phillies 6-4 Friday night.

Soriano became the third player in major league history to have at least four seasons of 30 homers and 30 stolen bases, and Tony Armas Jr. pitched 5 1-3 effective innings for the Nationals.

Soriano, who was 4-for-6, led off the game with his 39th homer and stole his 30th base in the second inning. Only Bobby and Barry Bonds have reached those numbers five times.

Soriano Placed On Waivers

Ken Rosenthal has learned that Alfonso Soriano was placed on waivers Tuesday by the Washington Nationals. Placing players on waivers is rather routine, but raises the question of whether the team is making one last attempt to trade Soriano before he becomes a free agent.

It is doubtful that Soriano will be traded; he is unlikely to clear waivers, and any team that claimed him almost certainly would exert its leverage on the Nationals in an effort to make a one-sided deal.
