Bowden's Fiancee Accepts Plea Deal

The fiancee of Washington GM Jim Bowden accepted a plea agreement Wednesday to settle charges of battery and resisting arrest in Miami Beach.

Joy Browning must complete 25 hours of community service and attend an anger management class for the charges to be dropped. Browning refused to comment outside court, except to say that they were still a couple.

They were in Miami on April 17 for the game against the Marlins. Bowden was pulled over for allegedly running a stop sign. After police said he failed a field sobriety test and refused to take a breath-alcohol test, he was charged with driving under the influence. He pleaded not guilty in May.

Soriano Trying To Ignore Trade Rumors

With Alfonso Soriano entering his first year of free agency and the Nationals out of contention, it is very likely that he will be dealt.

"Our preference is to keep him," GM Jim Bowden said. "If we had to trade him, we would do well in the trade."

"If I like it here, you never know," Soriano said. "If they want me to stay here, it depends on the situation."

Soriano said he ignored trade rumors "because you never know if it's going to happen or not."

The Yankees have not contacted the Nationals about Soriano, while the Mets have an excess of outfielders and do not feel that he is an upgrade defensively at second base. The Angels, Dodgers and Cardinals could eventually emerge in the chase.

Bowden In Limbo

Stan Kasten, incoming Washington Nationals president, has held several discussions with general manager Jim Bowden about the state of the franchise, but Kasten wouldn't reveal whether he has made a decision about his future. "I said I haven't announced a decision," Kasten said. "Whether I've made a decision or not, nobody really needs to know."

Bowden's contract is due to expire at the end of the season, but an annoucement on his fate could come beforehand.
