Jays Transitioning Lawrie To Third Base

The Blue Jays are transitioning prospect Brett Lawrie to third base.

Lawrie, who was acquired in a trade with the Brewers earlier this offseason, was drafted as a catcher and came up through Milwaukee's system as a second baseman.

He has spent the first few days of spring training working with veteran John McDonald and third-base coach Brian Butterfield.

"The one thing that I like is that I think this guy has a willingness to work," Butterfield said. "He has been out early with the veteran guys and had the chance to handle the ball a little bit.

"He's a guy with obvious ability. Very explosive, very strong, very athletic -- and I'm really looking forward to seeing more, but right now it's just the tip of the iceberg."

Francisco Emerges As Favorite To Become Toronto's Closer

Frank Francisco has emerged as the favorite to be named the closer of the Blue Jays this spring.

Francisco, who Toronto acquired in a trade this offseason, is facing competition from fellow veterans Jon Rauch and Octavio Dotel.

"When you look at the guys in that mix, the fact that he attacks lefties with that success rate kind of gives him the edge coming in -- at least on paper," manager John Farrell said.

Over his six-year-career, Francisco has held lefties to a .214 batting average while striking out 135 batters over 124 1/3 innings.

Jays Finalize $65M Deal With Bautista

Jose Bautista's five-year deal worth a guaranteed $65 million marks the largest contract Alex Anthopoulos has handed out since he was put in charge following the 2009 season.

Anthopoulos understands where that talk is coming from but feels in this case, the potential reward outweighs the risk.

"The easy thing for me would have been to sit back and wait," Anthopoulos explained to a group of reporters Thursday evening. "If he didn't perform, nobody could criticize me for that. If he does perform, people could certainly make excuses for me and say, 'Well, how do you pay him after one [good] year?'

"That's the easy way out. If I ultimately believe in the player, and I ultimately believe in the performance, and that he's going to be a very good player for us ... then that's my job irrespective of the criticism. The risks [are] part of it, but that's part of what I do."

Jays Close To $65M Contract With Bautista

Toronto Blue Jays general Alex Anthopoulos all but confirmed a multi-year deal with slugger Jose Bautista has been worked out.

Bautista's arbitration hearing to determine his 2011 salary was supposed to happen on Friday in Phoenix.

Anthopoulos said he'd be surprised if Bautista remained in Phoenix much longer.

"I'd expect him here by tomorrow," Anthopoulos said, a strong inference that Friday's arbitration hearing was no longer necessary.

Bautista was seeking a raise on a one-year deal that would see his salary increase to $10.5-million from $2.4.

The Blue Jays had countered with an offer of $7.6-million.

Late Wednesday night, ESPN Deportes was reporting that the Blue Jays and Bautista were close to agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth approximately $65-million.

A club option could bring the deal's total value to $78-million over six years.

Blue Jays, Bautista Delay Arbitration Hearing

The Blue Jays and slugger Jose Bautista have delayed their scheduled arbitration hearing as they eye a long-term agreement, according to a source.

Bautista, 30, requested a salary of $10.5 million for 2011, while the club offered $7.6 million.

He would be eligible for free agency after next season if a multiyear deal isn't reached.
